How to Stop Hair Loss

Millions of women, and especially men, suffer from excessive hair loss. If you're losing your hair, then you're probably more than ready for a solution. Luckily, the steps to stop hair loss can be simpler than you think. The first step is understanding the cause.

Although the most common cause of hair loss is genetics, especially in males, there are a wide variety of factors that may lead to hair loss in both men and women. If genetics has been ruled out, it's time to investigate a little and figure out why the problem is occurring. The first thing you should do is see your doctor. After a thorough examination, your doctor will diagnose the cause of your hair loss and provide treatment options.

There are many reasons why you could be losing your hair. Malnutrition is a potential cause, as is infection or illness. Certain prescription medications can cause excessive hair loss as well. Then there is hair loss that's caused by a hormonal imbalance. Many women find that they shed heavier than usual a few months after giving birth due to the hormonal shifts. Even too much stress is a possible reason why you're losing your hair.

Treating your hair loss can be done in a wide variety of ways. For example, if your hair loss is caused by a nutritional deficiency, vitamins and a new diet plan may be the remedy. For hair loss that's a result of stress, you may need to learn some relaxation techniques or attend counseling. You'll find that with illness or hormonal imbalance, you may need medication.

However for genetic hair loss, more aggressive treatments may be in order. Rogaine is an over the counter topical treatment that many men and women have found success with. For male pattern baldness that's more stubborn, there's a pill called Propecia. While Propecia can work wonders for men with baldness, it should not be taken by women or children.

You'll also find a variety of shampoos, conditioners and hair treatments that claim to help hair loss problems. The process to stop hair loss, however, is usually more involved than simply shampooing your hair. Some products can improve the condition and diameter of the hair, but don't usually regrow hair. However, if your hair loss is due to your hair being damaged from abuse or styling, then therapeutic shampoos and conditioning treatments can provide dramatic results.
